Many of us know Sandi Kurland as the Director of CASL and leader of all things student leadership in California. But did you know Sandi had a life in student activities before CASL/CADA?
“Sandi got her start with student leadership development at the same place I did – Wentzville High School in Missouri! I was the leadership teacher and student council advisor there and when I left that school I hand-selected my successor. He ended up only doing it for a year because he became an assistant principal in August the following year. He picked Sandi (who wasn’t there when I was there) to replace himself. She got to “know” me by reading all my notes in the files I had left for the various activities, then we finally met through the Missouri Association of Student Councils and became friends. Now we are both very active in two different states, but we both owe our roots and early student leadership advising skills to MASC and Wentzville HS!”
- Lyn Fiscus, Extracurricular Specialist, Loudoun County Public Schools and Executive Director of the Virginia Association of Student Councils
Sandi also volunteers many hours in addition to her work with CASL to help state directors across the nation as the President of the National Association of State Student Council Executive Directors (NASSCED).
“Sandi Kurland embodies the spirit of service. As a devoted member of the National Association of State Student Council Executive Directors (NASSCED), her work has always been guided by a simple principle: doing for others above self.
Sandi has dedicated herself to empowering youth and fostering leadership. Her colleagues describe her as someone who brings people together, celebrates successes, and ensures every voice is heard. Whether organizing impactful conferences or mentoring new directors, Sandi’s passion shines through.
To her, leadership starts with service. Her favorite moments are seeing others thrive—students taking the stage, directors collaborating, and communities coming together. For Sandi, NASSCED isn’t just an organization; it’s a family, and she’s committed to leaving it stronger for the next generation.
Her mantra, “above self,” isn’t just words—it’s a way of life. Sandi Kurland’s legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering dedication, and a belief that when we lift others up, we all rise together.”
- Robeta Bittel, Past Director of NYCSLA and Treasurer of NASSCED
We are beyond grateful for Sandi’s vision and leadership in guiding our student leaders and supporting advisers and directors not only across California but across our nation.
