The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has several new rules for 2024:
- Heat stress guidelines: Effective July 1, 2024, CIF-member schools must schedule outdoor practices during cooler times, provide shade and frequent breaks, and postpone or cancel practices and competitions during extreme heat. Coaches, athletic trainers, and athletes must also be trained to recognize signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- No-contact dead period: The CIF Sac-Joaquin League voted for a mandatory no-contact dead period from July 1–14, 2024, for all sports in fall, winter, and spring. This means no practice, conditioning, team building, weightlifting, meetings, or fundraisers during this time.
- Flag football rules: Electronic communication devices are not allowed with players in the field of play, but they are permitted during timeouts and when players are not participating in scrimmages. Officials are also not allowed to use video to change calls during a game.
Other new rules for 2024 include:
- CIF commissioners may suspend parents from attending games for three to six games if they are ejected
- Soccer may become the next sport to have a state championship if member schools approve
