As we continue to prioritize student-athlete safety, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has introduced a new rule centered around the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index. This index is a crucial tool for monitoring environmental conditions and ensuring that practices and competitions are held under safe circumstances, particularly in our increasingly hot climate. (California Assembly Bill AB1653 An act to amend Section 35179.4 of, and to add Section 35179.8 to, the Education Code, relating to interscholastic athletics, signed by the Governor October 2023)
The WBGT measures heat stress in direct sunlight, accounting for temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover. Unlike the standard heat index, WBGT provides a more comprehensive assessment of the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Under the new CIF guidelines, schools are required to monitor the WBGT during all outdoor activities. If the WBGT reaches certain thresholds, specific protocols must be followed. These include adjusting practice times, reducing the intensity of activities, providing more frequent water breaks, or even canceling or rescheduling events if necessary.
This rule aims to protect our student-athletes from the dangers of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can have severe consequences. Coaches, athletic directors, and trainers across California are now equipped with the necessary tools and training to implement these guidelines effectively.
By adhering to these new regulations, we are taking proactive steps to safeguard the well-being of our athletes, ensuring that they can compete and practice in a safer environment.
