Sometimes leadership begins with a campaign speech. Sometimes it begins with being noticed.

For Hannah Bautista, the journey started in eighth grade during what was supposed to be an ordinary school day. She was taking American Sign Language when scheduling changes placed her in a homeroom with the ASB teacher, Mr. Noboa, who had also been her PE teacher.

After Hannah won a Kahoot game about school safety, another teacher pointed her out and mentioned she would be a great fit for ASB.

Mr. Noboa asked a simple question.

“Do you want to be in ASB?”

Hannah said yes.

Just like that, a new path opened.

Learning to Lead Without a Title

At first, Hannah did not enter ASB with a title or a grand plan. She simply showed up and became involved.

By the end of the year, younger students had started looking up to her, especially seventh graders who came to her with questions about events and leadership.

She remembers thinking it was funny because she was new too.

“This is my first year also,” she would tell them.

But their trust showed her something important. Leadership is not always about experience. Sometimes it is about presence, attitude, and the willingness to help.

That realization became fuel for the years ahead.

Why She Stayed

Many students join activities for a semester and move on. Hannah stayed because of how leadership made her feel.

She found joy in helping others. She found meaning in creating positive experiences. She found confidence through contribution.

Most of all, she discovered that doing good work for others often creates the strongest kind of motivation.

Positive feedback mattered, but what mattered more was knowing she was making a difference.

Leadership Is Bigger Than the Position

Now a tenth grader preparing for junior year at Golden Valley High School in the Santa Clarita Valley, Hannah continues to pursue new opportunities.

She is running for a captain position in one of her ASB committees, but she speaks about leadership in a way that feels deeper than elections.

“If I don’t get it, I’m still going to do the work,” she shared.

For Hannah, leadership is not about the title.

It is about doing what you care about.

It is about showing up for something that matters to you.

That perspective gives her voice a refreshing honesty. She wants to lead, but she does not need a label to do it.

Wanting to Raise the Standard

Hannah has another goal in mind, becoming ASB president during her senior year.

She speaks openly about why.

She believes she can help create positive change. She wants to improve the program and bring stronger leadership to the role.

Rather than criticizing the past, she focuses on the future.

“I feel like I could be a step up,” she said with confidence.

It is the kind of statement that comes from someone who has been paying attention, learning, and preparing.

An Artist’s Heart

Outside of leadership, Hannah carries a deep love for the arts.

She enjoys art history, museums, painting, drawing, cooking, and baking. She even brought cupcakes to a board meeting, a detail that says a lot about who she is.

She is creative, thoughtful, and eager to contribute something personal to the spaces she enters.

Leadership and art may seem different on the surface, but both involve imagination, expression, and the desire to create something meaningful for others.

Discovering CASL

Hannah became connected to CASL through the Ambassador Program, and once she found it, she embraced it fully.

Now one of her goals is to bring both her high school and former middle school to the CASL conference so more students can experience what she found.

She knows firsthand how life changing these opportunities can be.

Sometimes all a student needs is exposure to a bigger world, a larger network, and a room full of peers who care about leadership too.

Looking Ahead

When Hannah talks about the future, her ambitions are both impressive and compassionate.

She hopes to attend UC San Diego, drawn by its strong medical and marine biology programs.

She is considering two paths, marine biology or pediatrics.

Right now, pediatrics may have the edge.

She talks about how fascinating the human body is, and how meaningful it would be to help children feel better when they are hurting.

That instinct to care for others feels consistent with everything else in her story.

Advice to Younger Students

Hannah admits that when leadership was first introduced to her, she was not interested.

She assumed it was full of pretentious people and did not see the point.

Then she actually got involved.

Once she experienced leadership from the inside, everything changed.

Because of that, she encourages younger students to keep an open mind. Do not reject opportunities before learning what they really are.

She also encourages students to be willing to reach out, ask questions, and explore programs like ASB and CASL sooner rather than later.

A closed mind can shut ninety percent of the doors waiting to open.

Rising Above Doubt

Hannah also faced backlash early in her ASB journey because she had been placed into the class rather than selected through a traditional interview.

Some students doubted her. Others spread rumors before giving her a chance.

Instead of shrinking, she grew stronger.

She learned not to let other people define her value.

She learned confidence.

She learned that criticism often says more about the speaker than the person being targeted.

Those lessons have helped shape the leader she is becoming.

What Great Advisors Do

When asked what made the biggest difference, Hannah quickly named the adults who supported her.

Her advisors listened.

Not just politely, but fully.

They heard her ideas, processed her words, and treated her like someone whose voice mattered.

She says they treated students not just as kids in desks, but as real leaders capable of making change.

That belief changed everything.

When adults place genuine faith in students, students often begin to believe in themselves too.

More Than a Student

Hannah’s story is about many things, confidence, creativity, resilience, ambition.

But perhaps most of all, it is about what happens when a young person is seen as more than just a student.

Seen as a leader.

Seen as someone with something to offer.

Seen as someone ready to grow.

And once that happens, there is no telling how far they can go.
