Area B kicked off the school year by hosting not one, but two New-B Advisor Conferences, designed to support new Activities Directors as they begin their leadership journey.
The first conference took place on September 9 at Westmont High School (South Bay), followed by a second on September 10 at Castro Valley High School (East Bay). Both gatherings provided an intimate and collaborative setting where advisors could connect, ask questions, and gain practical tools for success.
A Focus on the Essentials
The conferences centered around the key foundations of running an effective activities program. Topics included:
Curriculum and grading for leadership classes
Committees and event planning strategies
Managing clubs
Finances and running business meetings
Staying organized as an advisor
Open Q&A to address advisor-specific challenges
Advisors not only received guidance on these important areas but also had the chance to share resources and problem-solve together, creating a strong sense of community right from the start.
South Bay & East Bay Teams
The conferences were guided by experienced advisor teams who generously shared their expertise and resources:
South Bay Team (Westmont HS)
Laura Saldaña (Westmont HS, Area B Coordinator)
Mike White (Monta Vista HS, President 2014-15)
Lisa Hall (Gunn HS)
East Bay Team (Castro Valley HS)
Tommy Maloney (Castro Valley HS)
Francis Rojas (Berkeley HS)
Jen Rodrigues (Arroyo HS)
Michael Soltau (Washington HS)
Building a Support Network
One of the highlights of both conferences was the opportunity for new advisors to build relationships with peers and mentors in their region. The sharing of best practices, resources, and solutions underscored the CADA spirit of “We are stronger together.”
Area B’s New-B Advisor Conferences truly set the tone for a successful year, ensuring that new Activities Directors feel equipped, encouraged, and connected as they take on the important work of shaping student leadership.
